WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College volleyball team got off to a slow start in all three sets and Bowdoin College took advantage for a 3-0 win in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Melissa Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) finished with 11 kills and setter Sophia Cornew (Portola Valley, Calif.) had 30 assists for Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears move to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play heading into two matches at two sites on Saturday. Bowdoin travels to Bates College for an 11:30 a.m. match and then later hosts Tufts University at 6 p.m. Colby, which falls to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in league play, will entertain Tufts at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Bowdoin took big leads in all three sets in taking a 25-13, 25-12, 25-22 win. The Polar Bears led 16-6 in the third set, but Colby did fight back to make it a 22-20 deficit at one point.
Haskell had a 42 percent attack rate, nine digs, and two service aces. Cornew added team-highs of 13 digs and three service aces. Ellie Brennan (Medway, Mass.) finished with seven kills and a pair of blocks and Taylor Vail (Glendale, Calif.) had 10 digs.
Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led Colby with 15 digs and a match-high four aces, while Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) dished 18 assists and had 15 digs. Maggie Taylor (Washington, D.C.) had a team-high six kills and had 14 digs and teammate Natalie Roy (Los Altos, Calif.) had 15 digs and four kills.
