Volleyball has fast start in loss to Tufts, 3-1

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College volleyball team came out strong and took the first set against Tufts University, but the Jumbos took control after that for a 3-1 NESCAC win Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
 
Tufts sophomore outside hitter Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) finished with 14 kills and a match-high 24 defensive digs. Brennan had a 46 percent attack rate (just one error) in helping the Jumbos improve to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Tufts took a 22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-9 win.
 
Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, Calif.) and Kiersten Ellefsen (Goshen, N.Y.) both had seven kills for Tufts. Kendall Lord (LaJolla, Calif.) dished 41 assists and added 10 digs, Juliana Goodbar (Berkeley, Calif.) had two service aces and three blocks, and Virginia Clay (Santa Clara, Calif.) had 11 digs and two aces.
 
Colby first-year outside hitter Natalie Roy (Los Altos, Calif.) had a collegiate-high 18 kills and added 12 digs for the Mules (8-6 overall, 1-4 NESCAC). Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 31 assists and 16 digs, Maggie Taylor (Washington, D.C.) smacked eight kills and had 13 digs, and Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had four aces.
