Volleyball drops NESCAC match to Bobcats

LEWISTON, Maine --- Despite 18 kills and 17 defensive digs from first-year Natalie Roy, the Colby College volleyball team fell 3-1 to Bates College in NESCAC play Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.
The Mules fall to 8-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while Bates moves to 8-10 overall and also 1-5 in the league. The two teams are tied with Hamilton College with 1-5 records and are battling for the eighth and final playoff spot for the NESCAC tourney.
Maggie Taylor finished wth a match-high 25 digs and added 12 kills for the Mules in the 25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20 setback. Kate Pleasants had 48 assists and 15 digs, Lily Kramlich-Taylor smacked eight kills, and Kim Donaldson had six kills.
The first set of the match was tied at 19-19 before the Bobcats pulled away for the 25-22 margin. Bates took control midway through the second set and led 24-20 at one point before holding on for the 25-22 win. The Mules did battle back and held a 24-15 lead at one point in the third set.
Eliza Pyne finished with 15 kills and eight blocks for Bates. Miranda Shapiro had 50 assists Kelsey Berry and Mary Deneen both had 11 kills, and Nicole Russell finished with 10 kills and 18 digs.
Colby plays another NESCAC match Friday at Wesleyan University (0-7 league) at 8 p.m.
