Volleyball earns league win over Bates

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Maggie Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) finished with 12 kills and 15 defensive digs and teammate Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) added 11 kills and 20 digs as the Colby College volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference volleyball Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
 
The Mules move to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Bates falls to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
 
Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with 38 assists and 18 digs for the Mules. Mackie Sewell (Santa Barbara, Calif.) ripped seven kills and had four blocks, Kate Bellerose (West Newton, Mass.) finished with six kills and six blocks, Lily Kramlich-Taylor (Sacramento, Calif.) had six kills and three blocks, Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) chipped in 19 digs and two service aces, and Ellie LInden had 10 digs.
 
Colby was up 23-19 in the fourth set before Bates stormed back with four straight points to tie the set up. The Mules, though, relaxed and scored the next two points for the match.
 
Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calf.) finished with 13 kills and nine digs to pace the Bobcats. Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) added 12 kills and seven blocks, while Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) had 10 kills apiece. Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) dished 30 assists and had 10 digs and teammate Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had 20 digs.
