Varni over 1,000 career digs as Mules split

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. --- Colby College senior co-captain Emily Varni went over 1,000 career defensive digs as the Mules took a 3-2 win over Wheaton College and a 3-0 loss to Swarthmore College at the Hall of Fame Tournament on Saturday.
 
Colby moved to 12-9 on the season heading into Tuesday's home non-conference match with Bowdoin College at 7 p.m.
 
The Mules took a come-from-behind 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-9 victory against Wheaton. Varni entered the match with 993 career digs and had 18 and added two service aces. Natalie Roy went over 200 kills for the season with 15 against Wheaton and had 12 digs and four aces. Lily Kramlich-Taylor and Kim Donaldson both had 11 kills, while Maggie Taylor added eight kills and 15 digs. Colby setter Kate Pleasants had 37 assists, 10 digs, and five aces. Ellie Linden contributed six assists, four aces, and six digs.
 
After the long match against Wheaton, Colby may have been a little tired in a 25-14, 5-16, 25-23 loss to Swarthmore. Kramlich-Taylor had seven kills and three blocks, Kate Bellerose finished with six kills, Taylor had 15 digs, and Pleasants added 14 assists and eight digs.
