2010 season highlights: Newton earned the prestigious 2011 Scholar-Athlete Award from The State of Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation. He also earned Colby's Donald Lake Award for outstanding athletic ability, leadership, and academic accomplishment. Richard started at defensive back and led the Mules in interceptions with two for 95 return yards. He scored a touchdown against Hamilton in a home win. Newton was seventh on the Mules in tackles (30) and was second in pass break-ups (5). Rich also was on the NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team. 2009 season highlights: Richard had 11 total tackles, one interception, and two pass break-ups. 2008 season highlights: Newton finished with 21 tackles, including 18 solo stops, and was second on the team in interceptions with two and tied for second in pass break-ups (5). 2007 season highlights: Rich made an impact in his first year with 15 tackles and four pass break-ups. At Colby: Richard majored in Government with a minor in Administrative Science...member of the Executive Board of the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement...tour guide with the admissions department...member of Colby's branch of the Army ROTC...also a member of Colby's baseball team and earned All-NESCAC and All-New England honors.
