Women's basketball drops conference game

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) had a game-high 23 points, but Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) had 15 of her game-high 19 points in the opening half to lead the Bates College women's basketball team to a 60-48 win over the Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Kelly also had a game-high four steals and dished three assists for the Bobcats (7-7 overall, 1-2 NESCAC). She was 9-for-13 from the field and made her only free throw.

Molly Brown (Dartmouth, Mass.) was 6-for-11 from the field for 15 points, while Brianna Hawkins (South Portland, Maine) added 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for Bates. Taryn O'Connell (Georgetown, Mass.) chipped in eight points and three assists.

Manduca also dished five assists for Colby (6-7 overall, 1-1 NESCAC). Brooke Chandor (Barrington, Ill.) was 4-for-4 from 3-point range for 12 points, while Gabe Donahue (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had seven boards.

Colby took a 2-0 lead in the first half, but then went about seven minutes without a point as Bates took an 11-2 margin. With the score 20-12, the Bobcats used a 19-5 run over the final 5:31 of the half to take a 39-17 lead at intermission.

Bates led by as much as 22 points (49-27) with 13:08 remaining, but Colby did battle back. The Mules got as close as 58-48 with 3:13 remaining after a Manduca basket.
