Women's basketball finishes sweep of Bates

LEWISTON, Maine --- The 22nd-ranked Colby College women's basketball team made it a regular season sweep of Bates College after the Mules took a big early lead and held on for a 67-57 win on Friday night in New England Small College Athletic Conference play.
 
The Mules move to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference heading into a 2 p.m. game at Tufts University on Saturday. Tufts fell 57-56 to Bowdoin College on Friday. Bates dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the league.
 
Diana Manduca finished with a game-high 15 points and sank key free throws in the final minute for the Mules. She also added three assists and was 4-for-7 from the field. Manduca, a junior guard, went over 600 career points and is at 611 heading into Saturday's game.
 
Jil Vaughan reached 500 career rebounds for Colby while finishing with 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Aarika Ritchie added 11 points and a game-high seven assists, while Jacky McLaughlin and Rachael Mack both had 10 points as all five starters were in double figures. Manduca, Ritchie, McLaughlin, and Mack all had four field goals and all sank two 3-point shots.
 
The Mules started a 14-0 run at 12:19 of the first half that gave Colby a 30-8 lead with 6:13 to play. Bates did chip away the rest of the half and trailed 34-18 at the break. Colby spent most of the second half leading by double figures, but the Bobcats did cut the lead to six points with 22 seconds to play. However, Manduca and Jayde Bennett both went 2-for-2 from the foul line to give the Mules the 10-point margin.
 
Meredith Kelly was 7-for-11 from the field and had 14 points for Bates. Molly Brown added 12 points and five assists.
