Women's basketball drops game at USM

GORHAM, Maine --- Despite a big night from Colby College's Jil Vaughan, the University of Southern Maine women's basketball team used a big advantage at the free-throw line to pull out a 73-67 victory over the Mules in non-conference play Tuesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
 
The Mules fall to 13-5 on the season, while Southern Maine is now 16-4.
 
Vaughan had 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field and a 5-for-6 effort from the foul line. She also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to reach 555 for her career at Colby and also contributed a game-high four blocked shots.
 
Jen Nale came off the bench and hit 5-for-10 from 3-point range to score 15 points for Colby. Aarika Ritchie added 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting, contributed a game-high five assists, and had three steals. Ritchie went over 900 career points and is currently at 909. Rachael Mack finished with nine points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.
 
Haley Jordan led all scorers with 23 points, including a 13-for-16 effort from the foul line. Colby shot well from the foul line as usual, but was just 12-for-15 for the game. The Huskies were 26-for-33.
 
Nicole Garland added 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for USM. Courtney Cochran also had double figures with 13 points.
 
Southern Maine got off to a fine start to the game and led 26-9 with 6:51 to intermission, and still led 31-14 with 3:50 to play. The Mules fought back with a 6-0 run to make it 31-20 and trailed 33-23 at the break.
 
The Huskies scored the first six points of the second half to take control once again. USM led 44-28 with 16:04 to play, but Colby fought back again with a 14-2 run to cut the margin to 46-42 with 12:14 to play. With the score 52-45, Southern Maine used an 8-1 run to go up 60-46. The Mules would get as close as six points after a Mack 3-point shot with 46 seconds left, but Nicole Garland hit 2-for-2 from the foul line with 28 seconds to play.
 
The Mules head to Williams College for a NESCAC game Friday at 6 p.m.
