Women's basketball drops close opener at tourney

CASTINE, Maine --- The Colby College women's basketball team, after falling behind by as much as 26-9 in the opening half, battled back to take a lead in the second half only to fall 61-60 to Bridgewater State on the first day of the Maine Maritime Academy Tournament on Friday night.

The Mules (0-1 overall) will play in the consolation game of the tourney against University of Maine at Fort Kent at 1 p.m. Saturday. 

Colby first-year guard Desi Smith had a dazzling debut, scoring 22 points on 6-for-12 field goal and 11-for-12 free throw shooting. She also had seven rebounds in 34 minutes of play.

Diana Manduca added 10 points, but only played 20 minutes because of foul problems. Carylanne Wolfington added nine points on 4-for-8 shooting and added four rebounds, while Jacky McLaughlin had seven points and three assists. Gabe Donahue finished with a team-high eight boards for the Mules and dished three assists.

Bridgewater (1-0), which had a 45-35 margin in rebounds, received game-highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds from Michaela Cosby. Megan Boutilette added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Bridgewater settled for a 35-20 halftime lead and watched the Mules chip away at that margin in the second half. Colby only trailed 51-48 after Smith hit two free throws with 8:02 to play, but Bridgewater extended the lead back to 57-50 with 6:57 remaining. Wolfington hit an inside shot with 3:54 to cut the lead to 59-58 and then Manduca nailed a pair of free throws with 3:16 to play to give the Mules the lead at 60-59.

Just 12 seconds later, Cosby scored inside to give Bridgewater the lead back at 61-60. Both teams could not score a point in the final 3:04, with Colby missing on four jumpers during that time.
