Veilleux wins first game for women's basketball

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Jil Vaughan and Rachael Mack dominated inside and Julie Veilleux won her first game as a head coach in lifting the 16th-ranked Colby College women's basketball team to a 79-57 season-opening win over Clark University on Saturday on the first day of the Brandeis Tournament.
 
The Mules (1-0 overall) will meet the host school in the title game on Sunday at 3 p.m.
 
Veilleux, a 2004 University of Maine graduate, was an assistant coach at Division I Navy and at Bowdoin College before taking over as Colby's head coach.
 
Vaughan finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Mack added 20 points and nine boards. Aarika Ritchie finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, Jacky McLaughlin had 10 points and five boards, Kelly Potvin pulled down nine rebounds and scored nine points, and Diana Manduca finished with seven points and five boards. Ritchie and Manduca both had six assists.
 
Colby had a huge 59-28 rebounding advantage in the game. The domination on the boards helped the Mules, who shot just 29-for-79 from the field.
