Women's basketball upset by UNE in overtime

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The 14th-ranked Colby College women's basketball team had a season-opening win streak snapped at five by University of New England on Tuesday night.
 
Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) had a game-high 26 points and teammate Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) had 14 points and 17 rebounds as UNE took a 70-63 overtime win over the Mules in non-conference play.
 
Paradis shot 11-for-18 from the field and had 15 of her 26 points in the second half and overtime. Suggs had 13 of her rebounds in the final 25 minutes.
 
UNE (5-1 overall) led 13-4 early in the first eight minutes of the contest, but the Mules battled back and only trailed 24-23 at intermission.
 
The Nor'easters led 54-49 in the second half after a 3-point shot by Liz LeBlanc (Jay, Maine) with 3:43 to play. Colby's Diana Manduca made two free throws, but Suggs answered by making 1-for-2 from the line for a 55-51 lead. The Mules got to within one point at 55-54 with 1:55 to play when Aarika Ritchie (Lee, Maine) nailed a 3-point shot. Lauren Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) added one free throw with 21 seconds remaining for a 56-54 UNE lead, but Colby's Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) went all the way for a lay-up just five seconds later to tie it at 56-56 and send it to overtime.
 
UNE scored the first six points of the extra session for a 62-56 lead and then went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final two minutes.
 
Rousseau had 14 points and was 5-for-6 from the foul line for UNE. Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) dished a team-high five assists and Suggs also had three assists and two blocked shots.
 
Manduca finished with 21 points, five assists, and five steals for Colby (5-1). Ritchie added 15 points, six boards, and three assists. Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine) had eight points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.
 
Suggs helped UNE to a 42-39 rebounding advantage and the Nor'easters shot 20-for-29 from the foul line. Colby entered the game shooting 83 percent from the foul line as a team, but managed just a 64 percent (9-for-14) effort Tuesday.
 
Colby will play at Emmanuel College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
