After big win Thursday, women's basketball falls

LEWISTON, Maine --- After a big road victory over University of New England on Thursday, the Colby College women's basketball team could not make it two in a row after falling 62-49 to Bates College on Saturday at Alumni Gym.

The Mules head into the holiday break at 4-4 overall, while Bates moves to 5-5 overall. This game did not count toward the NESCAC standings. Colby returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 30, against Salve Regina at 3 p.m. in the Keene State Tournament.

The Mules started the game strong over the first 14 minutes. Colby went up 16-13 after a Diana Manduca 3-point shot with 13:27 to play. Manduca hit a jumper with 6:34 left to intermission for a 25-22 Colby margin.

Bates, though, went on a 10-0 run to take a 32-25 lead with 2:42 to play. Both teams scored one basket the rest of the way and the Bobcats took a 34-27 lead at the break.

Bates effectively held a six to eight point lead for much of the opening 12 minutes of play in the second half. With the score 48-40, Chelsea Nason hit two straight jumpers to put the Bobcats up 52-40 with 6:12 remaining. 

Colby only cut the lead to 10 points on one occasion after Brooke Chandor nailed a 3-point shot to make it 55-45 with 3:57 left. The Bobcats had a 7-4 scoring margin the rest of the way.

Manduca finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists for Colby. Carylanne Wolfington added seven points, five boards, and three assists. Desi Smith, Jamie Wallace, and Chandor all scored six for the Mules. Smith also had a game-high four steals.

Nason led Bates with game-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds, while Murphy added 12 points. The two players combined to shoot 10-for-12 from the field. 

Bates had a huge margin at the foul line, making 20-for-25 to Colby's 3-for-7 effort. The Mules did have a slight 33-32 rebounding edge and had 13 assists on 19 made field goals.
