Women's basketball held off by Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --- The Colby College women's basketball team battled back from 11 points down with 3:37 to play to cut the lead to two points, but Wesleyan University held on for a 46-42 victory in NESCAC play Sunday.

 
The Mules drop to 8-15 overall and 1-8 in the league and will not make the NESCAC playoffs. Colby will have a make-up game with Connecticut College on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Tufts University to end the season.
 
Diana Manduca finished with a game-high 14 points, tied a game-high with seven rebounds, and had a game-high five steals for Colby. Carylanne Wolfington added six points and six rebounds, while Brooke Chandor had five points and seven boards.

Kendra Harris paced Wesleyan (11-10 overall, 4-6 NESCAC) with 10 points, Miller Hartsoe had nine, and KellyAnn Rooney scored eight and dished four assists.

Colby got off to a great start in the game, taking a 7-0 lead just 2:12 into play. The Cardinals, though, settled down and took the lead at 12-10. Wesleyan went on to take a 29-17 margin at the break.

The Mules once again started fast and used a 13-0 run to take a 30-29 lead on a Manduca basket with 13:02 left. The Cardinals quickly grabbed back the lead by breaking the run and never trailed again. Wesleyan led 43-32 with 3:37 to go, but the Mules managed to cut the lead to 44-42 when Desi Smith hit 1-for-2 from the foul line with seven seconds left. The two teams fouled each other in the final seven seconds, with the Cardinals going 2-for-4 from the foul line.
