Women's basketball tops Cardinals, earns fourth seed

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The seniors dominated on Senior Day for the Colby College women's basketball team in a 66-48 victory over Wesleyan University on Saturday in New England Small College Athletic Conference play at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
 
Colby seniors Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine), Jil Vaughan (Wareham, Maine), Aarika Ritchie (Lee, Maine), and Kelly Potvin (Sherborn, Mass.) combined for 48 points, 27 rebounds, and 10 assists. All four players shot over 50 percent from the field. Colby (18-5 overall, 7-3 NESCAC) has a 77-28 record and two trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament over the past four years.
 
The Mules earned the fourth seed in the NESCAC playoffs and will host fifth-seeded Williams College next Saturday (time TBA).
 
Mack played her final regular season game at Wadsworth Gym and finished with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and eight rebounds. She is at 1,201 points for her career and has 775 rebounds.
 
Ritchie had 13 points and six assists Saturday to bring her career totals to 953 points and 336 assists. Meanwhile, Vaughan had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Vaughan, who had started just one game in her career before this year, has 855 points and 613 rebounds. Potvin came off the bench and had seven points and six rebounds.
 
Jayde Bennett (Lynn, Mass.) chipped in with six assists, five points, and four rebounds for Colby.
 
Eileen Gaffney (Manhasset, N.Y.) paced the Cardinals (13-8, 5-5 NESCAC) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Emily Lippe (Los Altos, Calif.) finished with nine points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks and two steals.
 
Colby darted out to a 10-0 lead and led 36-7 at one point in the first half. The Mules still led 38-14 at halftime and maintained about a 20-point lead for most of the second half.
