Women's basketball falls in tough OT game

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Carylanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) had 27 points for the Colby College women's basketball team and Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) had 12 of her game-high 30 points in overtime as Bates College took an 80-75 win over the Mules in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Kelly and Wolfington put on an offensive show. Wolfington finished with 27 points on 10-for-15 shooting and pulled down six rebounds. Kelly was 10-for-13 from the foul line, added 11 rebounds for a double-double, had a game-high six steals, and added three assists.

Bates moves to 5-3 overall, while the Mules drop to 3-4. The Bobcats will host the New England Small College Athletic Conference game later in the season.

Kelly came up big defensively in the final 22.5 seconds of overtime. After she gave Bates a 78-75 lead with a pair of free throws with 22.5 seconds to go, the Bobcats came up with a steal by Kelly on some half-court pressure with 15 seconds left. Kelly scored off the steal to make it 80-75 with 12 seconds left. She then came up with a steal as Colby tried to score a final basket.

Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) was 5-for-8 from the field, including a 3-for-6 effort from 3-point range, on the way to 13 points for Bates. Allaina Murphy (Poland Spring, Maine) also was 5-for-8 from the field for 10 points and Bernadette Connors (Windham, N.H.) chipped in 10 points and four assists.

Desi Smith (Watertown, Wis.) was 11-for-13 from the foul line and 5-for-9 from the field for 21 points. Gabe Donahue (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) added 10 points and six rebounds, while Mia Diplock (Augusta, Maine) had nine points and eight assists.

Smith tied the game at 63-63 with two free throws with 41.7 seconds left in regulation. After a missed shot by Bates with 12 seconds to play, the Mules missed on an inside shot at the buzzer to force the extra session.

Bates had 23 assists on its 30 made field goals, while the Mules helped their cause with 18-for-20 shooting from the foul line. Both teams had 40 rebounds.
