Women's basketball stays close until big run

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's basketball team stayed nearly even with unbeaten Bowdoin College for 23 minutes Saturday, but the Polar Bears used an 18-0 run to pull away for an 83-69 non-conference win at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears are 7-0 overall, while the Mules fall to 3-6. The NESCAC game between the teams will take place at Brunswick later in the season.

Colby played an inspired first half and trailed just 39-34 at intermission. The Mules cut the lead to 43-41 with 16:39 to play when Mia Diplock (Augusta, Maine) drained a 3-point shot.

Bowdoin, though, held the Mules without a point for the next 5 minutes, 2 seconds during the 18-0 run. The Polar Bears went from up two points to a 61-41 lead with 12:36 to play on a 3-point play by Siena Mitman (Mequon, Wis.). Colby broke the scoring run when Carylanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) hit a jumper with 11:37 left.

The Polar Bears led by as much as 25 points at 74-49 with 7:52 to go. Colby got as close as 14 points when Jen Nale (Waterville, Maine) hit a bucket for the final points of the contest.

Selena Lorrey (Kittery Point, Maine) was 6-for-12 from 3-point range on the way to a game-high 21 points for the Polar Bears. Shannon Brady (Scituate, Mass.) had a double-double with 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting and had 11 rebounds. Sarah Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) had 13 points and a game-high eight assists (1 turnover), while Megan Phelps (Southwest Harbor, Maine) had 10 points and nine boards.

Desi Smith had a team-high 15 points to lead Colby. Wolfington finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, Diplock had 11 points and seven assists, and both Nale and Appalonia Tankersley (Andover, Mass.) had eight points.

The Polar Bears shot 44 percent (11-for-25) from 3-point range, but Colby had a better overall field goal percentage (42.9 to 42.6).
