Early Guarente goal not enough for women's hockey

AMHERST, Mass. --- The Colby College women's hockey team jumped on top of fifth-ranked Amherst College for an early lead, but the Lord Jeffs broke a 1-1 tie with a goal midway through the third period on the way to a 3-1 win Saturday.
 
The Mules fall to 4-7-1 overall, while Amherst moves to 9-2.
 
Lauren Guarente scored at 9:01 of the first period off assists from Colby teammates Sylvia Xistris and Hannah O'Brien.
 
The Lord Jeffs, though, tied the game about five minutes later when Ellen Swiontkowski tallied on a power play at 14:18.
 
Amherst went ahead for good at 10:01 of the third period on Barrett McBride's goal. Swiontkowski added an empty net goal with 16 seconds remaining.
 
Brianne Wheeler stopped 23 shots for the Mules, while Amherst goalie Kerri Stuart had 13 saves.
