WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's hockey team heads into the final regular season game of the season Saturday with playoff chances still alive after suffering a 4-0 loss to Hamilton College on Friday at Alfond Rink.
Hamilton scored all four of its goals in the second period in a span of 7 minutes, 3 seconds to power past the Mules. The Continentals move to 10-12-1 overall and 7-8 in NESCAC play, while the Mules drop to 5-16-2 overall and 2-12-1 in the league.
The Mules now need a win in Saturday's 3 p.m. home game with Hamilton and either a loss or tie by Wesleyan University (3-12-0 NESCAC) to make the playoffs. Colby cannot make the playoffs with a loss or tie Saturday. If Colby and Wesleyan end up in a tie at 3-12-1, the Mules would secure the eighth seed based on a tie-breaker formula of having more wins against top four teams in the league (Colby beat third-seeded Bowdoin earlier in the year).
The Continentals had four different scorers in the second period and received 33 saves in the game from junior goalie Becca Hazlett (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.).
Laura DiCarlo (Chicopee, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal at 9:38 of the second period for her seventh goal of the season. Nikki Haskins (Quincy, Mass.) scored unassisted on a shorthanded situation at 11 minutes into the period. Hamilton put insurance goals up from Julia Beaty (Cambridge, Mass.) at 15:08 and then Katie Zimmerman (Plymouth, Mich.) tallied for her team-best 17th goal of the season at 16:41.
Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) stopped 30 shots for Colby.
