WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Former Colby College men's basketball head coach Dick Whitmore will receive the prestigious Division III Outstanding Service Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on Saturday, March 31, in New Orleans.
The award will be presented during the NABC convention. Recipients are selected based on careers as outstanding coaches, great teachers, and significant leaders in their communities. Coaches honored have distinguished themselves as wonderful role models to their players and associates, and embody the spirit of coaching.
Whitmore, who retired as head coach at Colby after the 2010-11 season, finished with a 637-341 career record with the Mules in 40 seasons. At the time of his retirement, Whitmore ranked in a tie for seventh all-time in NCAA Division III coaching wins and was tied for 42nd among coaches in all NCAA divisions.
Whitmore reached the post-season 27 times during his illustrious career and was honored as Maine Coach of the Year in four different decades (1973, 1975, 1981, 1995, 1997, 2001). He was inducted with the inaugural class into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and also was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
Mac Petty of Wabash College and Bill Harris of Wheaton (Ill.) College also will be honored with Whitmore at the ceremony.
