WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College goaltender Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) celebrated her birthday with a shutout and her first collegiate assist as the Mules had 66 shots on goal in a 4-0 win over Plymouth State University on Tuesday night at Alfond Rink.
Wheeler had 11 saves and played 56 minutes, 46 seconds before giving way to Olivia Rivera (Sayville, N.Y.) for the final 3:14.
Colby, now 3-4 overall, was 2-for-5 on the power play and struck first with the extra player at 8:21 of the opening period. Wheeler completed a long pass to Natalie Fischer (Freeland, Md.), who promptly found Lauren Guarente (Wellesley, Mass.) for the goal.
The Mules went ahead 2-0 after one period when Guarente scored her second of three goals on the night at 16:36. Maddie Dewhirst (Hanover, N.H.) and Meredith Reynolds (Marion, Mass.) each recorded their second assists of the season.
Guarente made it three straight goals at 6:22 of the second period off a pass from first-year Megan Fortier (Falmouth, Maine). Guarente, who has a team-best seven points, and Fortier are tied for the team lead in assists with three.
Sylvia Xistris (Larchmont, N.Y.) added the final goal with just 55 seconds to play after she was the recipient of a pass after a nice passing sequence between Kathy Shei (Iverness, Ill.) and Breanna Davis (Andover, N.H.). Xistris scored her first collegiate goal, Davis had her first collegiate point, and Shei notched her 15th career assist on the play.
Plymouth State goaltender Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ontario) stopped 62 shots in the game. She had 22 saves in the opening period, 15 in the middle period, and 25 stops in the final 20 minutes.
