WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College junior goaltender Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario), who made 91 saves and allowed just two goals in a perfect 3-0 week for the Mules, was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Player of the Week on Monday.
Wheeler, a captain, helped Colby (10-12 overall) clinch a NESCAC quarterfinal playoff spot after Sunday's 3-0 victory over Wesleyan University. She stopped 27 shots in the game and earned her sixth career shutout. Wheeler also had 30 saves in the Mules' 2-1 win against Wesleyan on Saturday and finished with 34 stops in a 2-1 road win at New England College on Tuesday.
Wheeler and Colby's veteran defense have allowed just 10 goals in the past eight games. The Mules are riding a current four-game win streak heading into Friday's 7 p.m. game at Hamilton College. Colby also plays a second game at Hamilton on Saturday at 3 p.m. The league playoffs will begin the following Saturday.
In the latest NESCAC statistics, Wheeler ranks first in the conference in total saves (592), minutes played by a goalie (1,268), is fifth in save percentage (.924), and seventh in goals against average (2.32).
