BIDDEFORD, Maine ---- The 10th-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team went to the final 5.7 seconds of the game in knocking off Amherst College on Saturday, but had a much easier time on Sunday with a 16-5 non-conference victory over University of New England.
The Mules (2-0 overall) will finish up three games in four days with Tuesday's 4:30 p.m. home contest with University of Southern Maine.
Tess Petesch finished with four goals, while Lane McVey had two goals and three assists for Colby. Katie Griffin added three goals, Sarah Lux and Katharine Eddy both had two goals and one assist, and Claire Donegan, Lindsey McKenna, and Sara Miller all had one goal and one assist. Miller had her first collegiate goal and assist.
The Mules were 5-for-8 on free-position shots, including a 5-of-7 effort in the opening half in taking a 10-2 lead.
Lux and UNE's Hannah Tavella traded goals in the opening four minutes of play. The Mules, though, went on a 7-0 scoring run to take command. Griffin and Eddy each had two goals during that time. Tavella added her second of four goals on the day with 3:17 to play in the first half, but Colby closed out with goals from McVey and Griffin.
Petesch, who had one goal in the first half, went to work quickly in the second half. She scored the first three goals of the half in about five minutes of play. The Mules went up 15-2 on goals from McKenna and McVey. UNE (2-2) scored three of the last four goals of the game in the final 16:32 of action.
Michelle Burt started in goal for Colby and made six saves, scooped three ground balls, and had one caused turnover. Donegan added two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while McVey also had two ground balls.
