WATERVILLE, Maine --- Two-time All-American Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.) had three goals, one assist, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers as the sixth-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team got ready for its spring trip with a 16-4 non-conference victory over Endicott College on Thursday at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules, now 3-0 on the season, first will play a New England Small College Athletic Conference game at Tufts University on Saturday at 11 a.m. Colby then heads to Florida for two games at the National Training Center in Clermont against Potsdam State on Sunday at 4 p.m. and a league contest against Hamilton College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Colby led 7-1 at halftime, but the first 30 minutes were closer than the score indicates. Mule goalie Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) made five saves in the opening half, many coming on shots by Endicott (2-3 overall) from right in front of the goal. Endicott also had a 6-3 edge in draw controls in the opening half.
Lindsey McKenna (Fairfield, Conn.) scored 2:41 into the contest to put the Mules up for good. Pistel added her first goal of the game off a pass from Hilary Barr (Ridgewood, N.J.) about three minutes later. McKenna, who finished with two goals and two draw controls, moved her career goal scoring total to 95.
The Mules went up 6-0 with four goals in a span of 9:19. Abby Hatch (Wilbraham, Mass.) tallied from Tess Petesch (Rockville, Md.), McKenna scored her second goal from Katherine Eddy (Cheshire, Conn.), Barr scored from Pistel for a 5-0 margin, and Sarah Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) scored from another assist by Eddy.
Endicott cut the lead to 6-1 when Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) ripped in a shot off a nice feed from Lauren Todd (Newfields, N.H.) with 7:38 to play to halftime. Petesch scored unassisted for Colby's final goal of the half with 1:40 to play.
After more than seven minutes of scoreless action to start the second half, Colby scored four straight to go up 11-1. Pistel tallied from Eddy's third assist of the game at 22:40, Katie Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) scored two straight goals with 19:52 and 18:16 to play, and Alex Mintz (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) ended the run with an unassisted score with 17:58 remaining.
The Gulls cut the margin to 11-3 when Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) scored unassisted with 15:09 to play and Caitlin Pratt (Bow, N.H.) added the third goal just 38 seconds later from Tierney.
The Mules pushed the lead up to 15-3 when Hatch scored her second goal, Pistel blasted in her third off a pass from Lux, Griffin also scored her third goal, and Sara Miller (Andover, Mass.) had a goal off a pass from Dana Swaffield (Dover, Mass.).
Todd closed out Endicott's scoring with 1:45 to play on an unassisted goal, while Swaffield had the final goal of the game with 37.8 seconds remaining from Grave McVey (Bronxville, N.Y.).
Burt made eight saves in 44:51 to earn her third win of the season. Claire Dickson (Darien, Conn.) made two stops in 13:24, and Sarah Evans (Cohasset, Mass.) played the final 1:45. Burt also had one caused turnover and one draw control.
Kirsten Karis (Southborough, Mass.) led Colby's defense with three caused turnovers, two ground balls, and two draw controls. Petesch added two caused turnovers, while teammates Eddy, McKenna, Brittany Chin (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and Swaffield all had two draw controls.
Stacia Geno (White River Junction, Vt.) led Endicott with three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Kelsey Barnes (Mendham, N.J.) had a game-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Todd and Rachel Campos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) both had three ground balls.
The Mules moved to 17-1 on Bill Alfond Field over the past three years and have a 52-14 record on the field over the last nine years.
