Women's lacrosse wins NCAA opener over Endicott

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Four Colby College players had three goals or more as the eighth-ranked Mules opened NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament play with a 21-5 win over Endicott College in first round action Wednesday night on Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules move to 14-2 overall and will play 10th-ranked Messiah College in a second round game Saturday at Trinity College (time TBA). Buffalo State and Trinity will meet in the other game. Endicott ends its season at 12-6.
Colby, playing in its sixth NCAA tourney, is now 5-0 in opening round games and has outscored the opposition by a 94-22 margin.
Alex Mintz (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had a collegiate-high four goals to pace the Mules, who led 13-4 at halftime. Colby All-American Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.), Claire Donegan (Great Falls, Va.), and Katie Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) all had three goals. Pistel also had two assists, three draw controls, two ground balls, and one caused turnover. Donegan reached 150 career points on 69 goals and 81 assists.
The game was tight for the first 15 minutes, with both teams looking sharp offensively. Endicott's Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) tied the game at 1-1 after Donegan had scored the first goal of the game just 28 seconds into the contest.
Donegan scored off a free-position shot with 25:39 to play and Pistel tallied 1:18 later to put the Mules up 3-1. The Gulls cut the lead to 3-2 on an unassisted goal by Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.) with 23:00 left. Colby went on a 3-0 scoring run on tallies by Griffin, Tess Petesch (Rockville, Md.), and Lindsey McKenna (Fairfield, Conn.). However, Endicott's Holly Davis scored with 16:46 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 6-3.
Colby put the game away with seven unanswered goals in a 12:01 span of time. Mintz started the run with 14:15 to play and ended it with 1:14 left for a 13-3 margin. The Gulls did cut it to 13-4 on Tierny's second goal of the game with 52 seconds left to intermission.
Donegan and Pistel scored goals in the first 4:15 of play to make the score 15-4 and put the 10-goal rule into play. The clock continued to run for the rest of the contest. Loizzo tallied on a free-position shot for Endicott to make it 15-5 with 21:03 left, but Colby scored the final six goals of the game.
Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) stopped eight shots in net for Colby, while Gull keeper Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) had a number of fine stops among her nine saves.
McKenna had four draw controls and four ground balls for the Mules, who had a 20-8 margin in draw controls in the game. Donegan and Griffin each had three draw controls.
Davis led Endicott with a pair of draw controls and Rachel Campos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had three ground balls, one assist, and one draw control.
