WATERVILLE, Maine --- Abby Hatch (Wilbraham, Mass.) placed a shot into the upper left corner of the net at 23:19 of the first half and Emily Brook (Duxbury, Mass.) posted the shutout as the Colby College women's soccer team took a key 2-0 win over Wesleyan University in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Sunday.
The Mules move to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference, while Wesleyan drops to 4-5-1 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Junior forward Annie Papadellis (Hopkinton, Mass.), who was a force all day with her speed, was first to a loose ball and quickly got it over to Hatch. The sophomore forward hit a shot from about 18 yards out over diving Wesleyan goalkeeper Jessica Tollman (Brookline, Mass.) and into the upper left corner. Hatch scored her second goal of the year and Papadellis pushed her team-leading point total to nine on three goals and three assists.
The Mules added the big insurance goal at 58:49 when Crysti Tsujiura (Scarborough, Maine) broke in and had her shot saved by Tollman, but the ball went directly to Kate Laxson (Wayzata, Minn.) on the right side of the goal and she ripped into the net for her second goal of the season.
The Mules still pushed forward the rest of the half and had 12 of their 18 shots in the final 45 minutes. The Cardinals had 11 shots in the game and both teams had three corner kicks.
Brook made four of her six saves in the first half for the Mules. Tollman had five saves in 82 minutes and Rachel Hobert (Chicago, Ill.) added two stops over the final eight minutes.
