WATERVILLE, Maine --- Victoria Abel (Carlisle, Mass.) and Sarah Wiener (Mequon, Wis.) fought off two match points at first doubles and came back to win the match to help the Colby College women's tennis team to an 8-1 win over Merrimack College on Sunday.
Colby, which was opening the spring season schedule, moved to 3-1 overall.
Abel and Wiener took a 9-7 victory over Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Katie Veasey (Atkinson, N.H.). Wiener also took a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Kara Hole (Portsmouth, R.I.) at second singles, while Abel won 6-1, 6-0 against Rachel Muller (North Andover, Mass.) at the third spot.
Mckenzie Love (Wenham, Mass.) did not give up a game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory at fourth singles. Sally Holmes (Prairie Village, Kan.) and Holly Bogo (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) took 8-0 pro-set wins at the fifth and sixth singles spots after the match had already been decided.
Tess Perese (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Holmes won 8-2 at second doubles for Colby. Love and Bogo won by the same score at the third spot.
Messina won Merrimack's match at first singles after falling 6-1 to Perese in the first set. Messina picked up a 7-5 win in the second set and then won 10-8 in a super tiebreaker to decide the match.
