WATERVILLE, Maine --- Kathryn Vergeyle (Orono, Minn.) and Mckenzie Love (Wenham, Mass.) won singles matches for Colby College in a 7-2 loss to 30th-ranked Bates College in NESCAC women's tennis Thursday. Vergeyle won 5-7, 7-5, (10-5 pro-set) at third singles over Jacquelyn Holmes. Love took an easier 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ashley Brunk in the sixth spot. Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) won at first singles and received help from Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) for a win at first doubles for the Bobcats.Anderson lost 7-5 in the first set at second singles, won a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) in the second set, and then took an 11-9 pro-set victory to decide the match against Colby's Tess Perese (Minneapolis, Minn.). The Mules' Sally Holmes (Prairie Village, Kan.) also fell in a pro-set match by scores of 2-6, 6-3, (10-2) at fourth singles. Bates improved to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the NESCAC.
