WATERVILLE, Maine --- Victoria Abel (Carlisle, Mass.) improved to 7-2 on the season at third singles for the Colby College women's tennis team after taking the lone win for the Mules in an 8-1 setback to 19th-ranked Tufts University on Friday in NESCAC play.
Abel won 6-3 in the first set over Shelci Bowman (Dallas, Texas) and then fell 6-3 in the second set. Abel came out on top 11-9 in the super tiebreaker to win the match.
Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, Md.) won at the first singles spot in straight sets and also was part of a doubles victory for the Jumbos.
Tufts moves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Mules fall to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Bowman and Lauren Hollender (Newton, Mass.) were winners at first doubles for Tufts. Colby's Tess Perese (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Sarah Wiener (Mequon, Wis.) were 6-0 before the match.
Samantha Gann (Massapequa, N.Y) won an opening set tiebreaker in beating Wiener at the second singles spot. Hollender, Janice Lam (San Francisco, Calif.) and Catherine Worley (New Orleans, La.) also had singles wins for the Jumbos. Katz combined with Gann for a victory at second doubles, while Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) and Andrea Compton (Cincinnati, Ohio) had the third doubles victory.
