Geographic Information Systems are often referred to as GIS.
Computer systems designed to manage, analyze and  manipulate geographic data.

Geographic data are data that are linked to a particular point on the earth’s surface. It is this link between data and location  that is the crucial component of a GIS- without this link, all  of the meaning is lost.
