•Effective culvert
•Ineffective culvert
Another feature of roads that helps prevent erosion are culverts.  Culverts divert excess water underneath a road and into an area where water can be absorbed by vegetation before entering a lake.
On the left, example of an  effictive culvert, well beneath the road surface, free of debris, not rusted, large enough to accommodate expected max water volume.
Ineffective culvert on right, too close to surface leads to damage, rusted, even a hole. Not very effective at diverting water underneath the road.
