Building a buffer strip is an effective way to keep extra nutrients out of the lake and is also relatively inexpensive, compared to other lake remediation techniques that youÕll hear about shortly. Here are some suggestions for a shoreline homeowner on Threemile pond

-Avoid mowing to the shore.   Nature will begin a natural buffer strip pretty quickly if a swath of lawn remains unmowed
-plant native shrubs, grasses and trees
- Avoid raking the ÒduffÓ layer, which is the layer of leaves, pine needles and twigs on the ground.  This debris protects soil from erosion and slows water runoff.
-Place riprap along the shoreline if there is bare or exposed soil.
-if cutting a path to the lake, make it narrow and winding so water doesnÕt run straight down

And finally,  any vegetation between a home and shoreline is better than none.  Creating  buffer strip is a process which may be done gradually.
