Another way that humans increase nutrient loads in the lake is through wastwater disposal.  There are many ways to process wastewater in rural areas that have no sewer.  Homes in Threemile Pond watershed use pit privies, holding tanks and septic systems, but of these methods, septic systems are by far the most common and will be the focus of my presentation.

Through observation and conversation with local plumbing inspectors and code enforcement officers, we learned that many septic systems were  too near the shore, old, grandfathered and leaky.  Grandfathered is a term that refers to properties that were built before a partictular law was passed and are therefore exempt from that regulation.

We concluded thatt Septic systems in the watershed are allowing nutrients and unprocessed wastewater to seep into the soil, streams and lake.
