Building a buffer strip is
an effective way to keep extra nutrients out of the lake and is also
relatively inexpensive, compared to other lake remediation techniques that
you�ll hear about shortly. Here are some suggestions for a shoreline
homeowner on Threemile pond

-Avoid mowing to the
shore. Nature will begin
a natural buffer strip pretty quickly if a swath of lawn remains unmowed
|
|
-plant native shrubs,
grasses and trees
|
|
- Avoid raking the �duff�
layer, which is the layer of leaves, pine needles and twigs on the
ground. This debris protects
soil from erosion and slows water runoff.

|
-Place riprap along the shoreline if there is bare or exposed soil.
|
|
-if cutting a path to the lake, make it narrow and winding so water
doesn�t run straight down
|
|
|
|
And finally, any vegetation between a home and
shoreline is better than none.
Creating buffer strip is
a process which may be done gradually.
