Maintenance of roads is one
of the most important factors in protecting a watershed from sedimentation
and eutrophication.

road surface. Particular
importance. Camp roads,
typically the roads closest to lakes, are primarily constructed out of sand
and gravel, which includes particles of sediment. These particles can do
great damage to a watershed when washed out of the road surface and carried
into a lake or stream as storm water runs down the roadbed (KCSWCD 2000).

Sediment fills in lakes,
decreases clarity, and increases phosphorus levels (see Background:
Phosphorus). Also carries phosphorus

of length and width were taken to calculate total acreage of roads in the watershed
