Impacts of
agriculture:
Agriculture
within a watershed can contribute to nutrient loading in a lake. Plowed fields and livestock
grazing areas are potential sources of erosion, which can carry sediments
and nutrients to a lake
fertilizers that carry phosphorus
Manure storage:
Manure spreading can lead to nutrient loading,
especially in winter when the ground is frozen and nutrients do not have a chance to filter
into the soil
To reduce
impacts:
-To
help prevent these problems the state has passed zoning ordinances, which
prohibit the storage of
manure within 100 ft of a lake or river (MDEP 1990). Another solution is to avoid
spreading manure
in the winter

contour cultivation: plowing
along the contours of land rather than up and down it, reduces runoff towards lake
Stubble mulching: retention of
stubble in seedbed
Minimizeing tillage: tilling
stirs up soils and sediments, minimize amount neccesary
