Hypolimnetic aeration is
another potential technique for 3MP.
It involves the prevention of anoxic conditions by aerating the
hypolimnion as can be seen in this picture�

In aerating the
hypolimnion, dissolved oxygen is increased and less phosphorus can be
released. This is because the
cycle of phosphorus leaching is disrupted - aerobic conditions promote the absorption
of phosphorus

2 types of aeration One that destratifies the H2O
column, and one that avoids mixing the bottom layers with the surface.

The layer technique would
be the type of aeration to consider because the destratification technique
could increase and recirculate rate of Phosphorus release, which could lead
to more algal blooms
|
|
the layer technique does
not destratify, and could eliminate anoxic conditions to minimize algal
blooms.
|
|
|
|
This aeration technique
however, is rather expensive, compared to the alum treatment and fish stock
manipulation because it requires installation of aerators and an ongoing
circulation system and a continual management program.
