Togus Pond was formed
through both natural and human influenced events
|

*About 25 to 20 thousand
years ago, Maine was covered completely by the Laurentide ice sheet
which moved in a
south-southeastern direction.

The motion of the ice
shaped the landscape of Maine, carving out hundreds of new lakes and ponds.

*The formation of Togus
Pond was enhanced by a series of damming and clear cutting procedures during
the 1800Õs
|
|
*This is a hypothetical map
showing the Togus Pond water level 4 feet lower than its current height
which is what it was likely to be at before any damming took place. The area in white was most likely
forested area. The first dam
was placed along Rt 3 where a brook feeds in. This was followed by subsequent dammings and clear
cuttings along the northwest cove which increased the size of the lake. A dam was also placed at route 105
where the culvet exists today and most recently, a dam was built down at Rt 17 that formed lower Togus.

and damming cycle still exists, as stump fields are visible well below the
water surface.
