A buffer strip is vegetation
between a development and a body of water, in this case Togus Pond.
Purpose: to filter and
capture sediment and nutrient runoff before it enters the water
Important because:
Development can disturb soil, change runoff patterns and promote erosion
Buffer strips are also Good
because: Give a home privacy and provide habitat for birds and other wildlife
As this illustration shows,
an ideal buffer strip would consist of zones of decreased development as you
reach the shoreline, with the natural vegetation remaining for at least 15
feet.
