These pictures show examples of a well-buffered and a poorly-buffered located on different Maine lakes.
The well-buffered home has almost full lakeshore coverage, a mix of trees and shrubs, and complete rip rap coverage.  Rip rap consists of the stones laid down along the shoreline to hold the bank in place and prevent erosion.  However, this buffer strip could be better as it has a deck built right into the bank, on the waters edge.
The poorly-buffered home is very close to the water.  Patches of exposed soil exist (point out), there are no shrubs and few trees, and the rip rap is incomplete.
