Berms prevent water from leaving the roadbed
This is a picture of a berm.  Berms form when grading or plowing push sediments to the side of the road, building up a ridge that prevents water from draining off the roadbed, causing erosion.  As you can see here, sediments were trapped against trees that are right on the roadÕs edge, most likely during plowing, as you can see scars on the tree trunk from the plow blade.  Berms can be easily cleared by moving the sediment elsewhere.
