Phosphorus Model:
Implications and Conclusions
Taking measures to reduce external loading will help
Sediments must also be addressed
Example:
Total P from:
- Roads
- Septic
- Residential

W
374 kg/yr

50%
As I mentioned before, taking measures to reduce external loading, such as keeping up road maintenance, septic systems, and buffer strips, will help, they cant do it alone.
The amount of phosphorus coming from the sediments MUST also be addressed, if the goal of reaching 15 ppb is to be met.
To illustrate this point, we used the phosphorus loading model to see what would happen if the amount of phosphorus from roads, septic systems, and residential development was reduced by 50%.
Even with this large reduction of external input, the total amount of phosphorus would only be reduced by 374 kg/yr, which is only 1/3 of the necessary reduction.
