So, the take home point is that in order to reach the goal of achieving a phosphorus concentration of 15ppb, both external and internal sources must be addressed.
It is important to address external sources to reduce the amount of new phosphorus that enters the lake each year.  This can be done by taking measures such as improving buffer strips, maintaining roads and newer septic systems and replacing older systems when necessary.
Sediment release must also be addressed, to reduce the amount of internal phosphorus cycling that occurs year after year, especially since this accounts for nearly half of the total amount of phosphorus within China Lake.
