Pre- 1974
septic systems without permits are potentially contributing
to nutrient loading

To estimate the impact of
septic systems, we used data from the China Lake Septic Project produced by
China and the KWD.
The project found the
majority of shoreline houses use septic systems but some houses have holding
tanks.
This graph compares the
town records of septic systems permits and the date of house
construction.What is most
important is the houses without permits on record. For the 94 houses built
after 1974, the lack of permits is probably more of a paper work issue than
non-compliance issue.
However, The 332 houses
built before 1974 or have no construction date available could have been installed improperly or be
malfunctioning.Therefore these
systems may be contributing to phosphorus and nitrogen loading in China
Lake.Updated records or
inspections are needed for these properties.
