We gathered information
about commercial land use in the China Lake watershed through our road
surveys and interview with town representatives. Commercial and municipal properties have the potential to
increase phosphorus loading because of their high proportion of impervious
surfaces.
Farming and forestry are
large industries in the community and need to be conducted in a sustainable
manner as pesticides and clear cut areas contribute to nutrient loading.
The China Primary and
Middle School are located very close to China Lake and maybe a large
contributor to phosphorus loading in the municipal sector because of
concentrated septic system usage.
There are five gas stations
in the watershed. In the past,
one of these stations had underground storage tanks that leaked and
contaminated soil.
Several smaller issues in
the watershed are a salt and sand storage area which was previously
uncovered, a landfill which was capped and continues to be monitored by the
DEP and seasonal eateries which contribute to concentrated septic system
usage in the summer.
