Gloeotrichia is a
cyanobacteria or Blue Green Algae
|

It is becoming increasingly
present in Great Pond, and subsequently the other belgrade lakes.

G is a photosynthetic
bacteria that starts its life cycle at the lake bottom
|
|
When there is enough
sunlight present it begins to photosynthesize in shallow parts of the lake
|
|
From here it picks up oxygen
and begins to move towards the surface
|
|
Here the population expands
creating in some places during the summer a thick colonization of
gleoetrichia several meters into the water column
|
|
|
|
It was seen in Long Pond,
and Messalonksee this past summer
|
|
|
