Water Budget Significance
Flushing Rate
The primary purpose of a water budget calculation is to determine the flushing rate of a lake. This is a measure of how often the total volume of water in a lake is replaced per year.
This is valuable information in projecting the future of Long Pond North with changing land uses because the length of water retention time is a factor in the lake vulnerability.  Low flushing rates do not change water quality, but they do make a lake more susceptible to accumulations of nutrients and pollutants.  Furthermore, Long Pond South receives water from the North Basin.  Any negative changes in Long Pond North will adversely impact the water quality of the south basin in relation to drainage rate.
