Gloeotrichia
•Blue green algae or cyanobacteria
•
•Seen on the surface
•
•Currently being studied at Colby
Gleotrichia has become a visible problem on Long Pond’s surface in the past few years. It mostly impacts people’s enjoyment of the lake, but with sufficient populations it will start to disrupt the nutrient cycle. It’s lifecycle and effects on lake health are currently being studied at Colby by Drs. King and Firmage with help from undergraduates.
