Opportunity for self cleansing is higher becauseÉ

More clean water coming into the lake.

Comparison to East Pond? Very little water coming in to was out nutrients. Very low flushing rate.

As shown in the previous slide, Net inputs of water into the watershed equal 26 million cubic meters of water. If we divide this number by the volume of Pattee Pond, we can find the flushing rate. We found a flushing rate of 2.72 flushes per year. This means the lakes water is replaced almost three times every year. This rate is slightly higher that the DEPÕs reported rate, most likely because we used a more detailed watershed boundary to calculate the area of the watershed.

2.72 is a high flushing rate. It means that nutrients will cycle quickly through the lake. As mentioned before, the water quality of lakes with high flushing rates is depended on the quality of surface water entering them. A high flushing rate often means that the lake will respond faster to remediation techniques.
