COC Officer’s Meeting Minutes
4/8/07
TRIP REPORTS
CHOPPING DOWN PRE-CHOPPED NATURE: This weekend’s Woodsmen meet was a sweet escape, with all visiting teams competing Jack and Jill style. Though bested by a beastly UMO team, Colby teams placed 2nd and 3rd over all. True to form Colby swept fire build and chain throw, and reaped first place for most Carhart worn per-square inch.
“LET ME SEE THAT TOOTSIE ROLL”: This past Wednesday’s roll clinic was “highly successful.” Tucker got his roll down within a record 15 minutes. For pictures of Colby stud, Seth Chanin instructing check out his phaty jpegs at http://www.insidecolby.com/article.php?articleid=29
THE PETER RAYMOND CATERAC: Ben Morse and Eric went to Mt. Washington, to ski on Peter’s namesake. No crying was reported, but according to Eric: “sweet drops that meat head should hit up [abounded].”
THE NEW TUMBLEDOWN: An intimate group of officers and members led a hike up Mt. Philip near Great Pond. Snowball fights, snow wrestling, and snow sculptures were discussed and implemented. This group recommends the Mt. Phillip hike for others looking for short drives, easy hikes, and sweet views. If you have questions about the hike email Bayley at brlawren@colby.edu
ALUMNI SKI DAY: Miriam and James led a group of members to Saturday’s Alumni-Student, ski day. The skiing was great, and trip was uber fun. Thanks to Stu-a and Alumni services for putting the trip together.

SATURDAY: MEGUNTICOOK
This Saturday Chelsea and Joanna will lead a hike up Mt. Megunticook. It’ll be a real chill hike, so hikers of all ability levels are encouraged to join this pair of Super Sophomores on this excursion to Camden. Martin and Seth will be leading a Mystery trip this Saturday. Confused? You should be. The purpose of the mystery trip is to put yourself blindly, perhaps stupidly, in the hands of our expert leaders for an adventure of a lifetime. You may go snowshoeing at Saddleback, cross-country skiing in Acadia, or snowball fighting in the arboretum; but until you meet at 8:00 a.m. in Dana for breakfast, you will have no knowledge of the trip plans. Two things you will know: 1) you will be back by dinner, 2) bring clothing for the outdoors, water bottle, and a fanny pack or day pack, 3) you will have fun with you’re new mystery friends.

C.O.C. NEWS:
NEW OFFICERSHIP: For her many outreach efforts with Tufts, Mt. Holyoke, and - of course - Bates, Miriam has been awarded the first ever “Officer of Outreach to Other Outing Organizations” (Ooooo). As the COC’s first ever Ooooo Miriam has already contributed more than she will never know to inner-club relations. Miriam: thank you for your tireless work and dedication to the cause. Both we [and they] couldn’t do it without you…
NEW OFFICERSHIP II: Toast has agreed to be the “Direction Man.” Though for some of our readership Toast’s new position is viewed as an oxymoron, we at the club are hoping Toast will defy his gender, and ask when he gets lost. Congrats to Toast, and thanks for taking on this hefty task.
DOUBLE-SECRET PROBATION: Cabin Managers and Presidents met last Friday with the administration to rework cabin policy. All groups decided a re-thinking of cabin etiquette was prudent for the longevity of use of our invaluable resource. Renters should be aware of the following changes that came out of the meeting: while COC will book and maintain the cabin, Jonathan will now hold cabin keys. On the day of your rental, or the Friday before please visit Jonathan to collect keys and fill out a cabin waiver. Changes will be in effect, at the very least, until the end of the semester. (NOTE: the cabin is a chem.-resource available for the entire Colby community. Please help us at the club by using the cabin responsibly).
VOTE OR DIE: Next Sunday the COC will hold elections for ’07-’08 officer positions. Officer positions available include: 2 co-presidents, 1 treasurer, 1 secretary, officer(s) of officers, cabin mangers(s), gear manager(s), webmaster, alumni relations, gear fix-it non-gender specific person, pro-deals, medical stuff, swift water, publicity, nudity, and feelings. If interested in any of the aforementioned officerships, be ready to give a speech at next Sunday’s meeting. If you are running for a Katadhin Council position (co-prez, treasurer, secretary) email out a platform to your fellow officers sometime this week, so we have time to review your sweet ideas.
IMPORTANT DATABASE UPDATE:
1) Any gear checked out needs to be returned so we can update the database. Please call folks during office hours to return gear rented prior to Monday.
2) If you’re checking in gear this week, please put it in the corner near the snowshoes, backpacks, etc. so that we can enter it into the database.
3) If you’re checking out gear this week, we’re going to be doing it by hand so look for the checkout sheet next to the computer.
JA RULES: Thanks to JaRuhle for hooking us up with the new website system. Paper sign ups are now obsolete! If you want to sign up for a COC trip just go to the COC website at www.colby.edu/coc and click on the calendar tab. Upcoming trips will be listed on the calendar, and click on the trip to join! Thanks again Jeff, we look forward to playing with the new system.
SPRING BREAK RETURNS…AGAIN: SB trip leaders please bring back spring break trip reports, and feedback. Trip reports and feedback help us to lead more efficient and better trips in years to come, so please help other officers (and yourself) by bring both to the office!
SURVEY SAYS...FRESHMAN GIRLS LOVE THE C.O.C.!
Maybe its EFM’s dashing good looks, Seth’s way with the ladies, or Miriam’s outreach initiatives, but first-year freshman girls have attended COC trips in high numbers. Thanks to Joanna’s recent survey efforts to bringing these demographic trends to light, as well as illuminating points of constructive criticism: many members also say trips aren’t as logisitically organized upon leaving, as they could be. Pre-meetings and better initial planning by officers were put forward as two possible solutions.
Shine on you crazy diamonds,
The COC
